It would not be
entirely a shock to discover that an star
line-up of former indie/pop big names had
invented a cover story to explain the gap
between their current and former activities.
Former Eat frontman Ange Doolittle, we are told,
had worked as a private detective in his
inter-band phase, hence the doorstepper-friendly
name of his new band, WeKnowWhereYouLive, formed
with ex-Wonder Stuff trio Malcolm Treece, Paul
Clifford and Martin Gilks.
Oh yeah? So
perhaps Ange would like to verify the tale. "He
can't," says Paul. "He's gone PI-ing again, up
in Scotland. He's gone to look for some French
person who's missing in Aberdeen. He's searching
for them as we speak. It helps him with ideas
for lyrics, I think." Cool, eh? Doolittle,
however, tracked down Treece a year ago to try
out ideas for a new thang which swiftly morphed
into the full, four-piece groove bonanza that
toured this year, blowing the lids of venues on
a regular basis. The loud suits have been packed
away, the haircuts have been shorn (Ange
excepted), and the end result - as showcased on
their new '(Don't Be) Too Honest' single - is a
fierce, funky, lithe, hyper-pneumatic rock in a
post-Chilli Peppers/Jane's Addiction vein.
"People obviously
have a preconceived idea of what we're like and
they may pre-judge us without hearing us," says
Paul. "But you just get on with it and hope
people listen to the music, rather than thinking
about what we used to do."
So what's it like
playing with Ange up front instead of Miles
Hunt? "He doesn't smack you round the head with
a guitar." Too busy with his magnifying glass,
no doubt. |
